Client Challenge

Despite advances in digital tools, many construction sites remain bogged down by manual workflows, fragmented apps, and communication bottlenecks. Our client—a large-scale, active construction retrofit project in Darling Harbour—suffered from:

  • Missed safety briefings due to staggered crew shifts
  • Difficulty tracking task ownership and progress
  • Delays locating workers, supervisors, and tools
  • Redundant paperwork and disconnected software
  • Quality control issues and traceability gaps
  • Technology friction due to poor training and mobile coverage

Over an 18-month consultation period with Thompson Security and more than 40 site professionals—site managers, engineers, safety officers, subcontractors—we gathered extensive feedback. The common request: “Give us one connected system that just works.”

The Cypernex + Thompson Solution

Cypernex partnered with Thompson Security to develop and deploy an IoT-based worker and asset tracking solution tailored specifically to construction environments. The system was designed to digitize and automate essential tasks—moving beyond dashboards and into action.

🔍 Key Technologies Used

  • Indoor/Outdoor Location Tracking using Bluetooth beacons, LoRaWAN, and trilateration
  • Wearable/Portable Trackers for workers and assets
  • Mobile & Desktop Apps with real-time site maps, task management, and crew coordination tools
  • Cloud Integration with photo and task verification, version control, and compliance data
  • Smart Gate Sensors & Optional Environmental Devices (e.g., human presence radar, tamper sensors)

Implementation at Darling Harbour Site

Trackers were issued to supervisors or individuals, designed to be worn discreetly or stored in gear. Bluetooth beacons placed throughout the building enabled accurate positioning—even underground, where GPS signals fail. LoRaWAN ensured reliable data sync from below ground to cloud.

Trilateration algorithms used the beacons’ fixed positions to calculate real-time worker location. The resulting data was integrated with mobile apps to provide a live view of the site—from crew locations to task status to quality sign-offs.

📱 App Features:

  • Unified login and interface for location tracking, documentation, and communication
  • Task assignment and completion verification by location
  • Real-time floorplans and site maps
  • Photo and checklist uploads for QA and compliance
  • Offline data capture with automatic cloud sync
