Reimagining Heritage with Smart Tech: Cypernex at the Coal Loader

Nestled at the tip of Waverton peninsula in North Sydney, the historic Coal Loader has undergone a stunning transformation — from a 20th-century coal bunkering site into a dynamic hub for sustainability, innovation, and community life.

Aquaponics Automation

As part of this multi-year initiative, Cypernex partnered with North Sydney Council in 2020 to bring cutting-edge automation to the site’s Aquaponics beds, which now flourish where once heavy industry thrived. The goal? To create a digitally connected, environmentally aware system that serves both science and the local community.

The result is a robust, cloud-connected network of sensors and custom-built controllers (Cyperboxes) monitoring everything from water quality and fish behaviour to environmental factors like air quality and leaf wetness. Volunteers and researchers alike now access real-time insights, enabling experiments, data sharing, and smarter sustainability practices — all managed remotely and securely.

This is more than just a tech installation. It’s a proof-of-concept for how industrial heritage, public space, and intelligent systems can co-exist to inspire and educate.
